A few years ago I started reading a series of books written
by Glenn Doman about teaching babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers how to
read, do math, and have encyclopedic knowledge. I strongly reccomend
you read his books, if you are not familar with his ideas. If you
only have time to read one book, then please start with "How to Multiply
Your Baby's Intelligence" because it seems to be the most universal of
his writings. Other titles include "How to Teach Your Baby to Read",
"How to Give Your Baby Encyclopedic Knowledge", "How to Teach Your Baby
Math" and another one on teaching brain damaged children. Sorry,
I don't remember the title of the one for teaching Brain Damaged children,
but if this is an issue that concerns your family, please read his book
and discover new hope for your child and for your fmaily! Glenn Doman
is the most exciting non-fiction author I have ever read, and he has a
talent for getting the readers excited to play with their children!
I finally found their web site also! You can order the books, or
Bit Cards, or even a Picture Dictionary CD-Rom online now! They ship
anywhere in the world (but overseas shipping is EXPENSIVE so be prepared).
Here is the web site:
http://www.iahp.org It just occurred to me recently that while I am making
the effort to create these "flash cards" of intelligence for my own children,
that perhaps I could concurrently offer them to my friends on the Internet
as well. I'm not sure if anyone else has attempted a task such as
this. If so, I have not found it on the Internet yet. And the
time it would take me to search for something that may not exist, I could
build it myself. So, here it is! Enjoy!
This web site includes only a portion of the ideas that
Glenn Doman talks about using in his books for increasing the intelligence
of young children. It is the "flash card" portion. The idea is that
children are little sponges for knowledge. And they learn at an incredible
rate of speed! Much faster than us grow-ups. They need only
to see the "card" for one second, then move on before the get bored and
distracted. Dr. Doman suggests that 10 is the maximum number of cards
to use in each session, so I have pre-arranged the selections into groups
of ten. At the end of each group, be sure to praise your child for
learning so quickly and doing so well. Never never never do more
sets of words than the child is intersted in doing! Learning should
always be fun, not forced. And try to always stop BEFORE your child
is ready to stop. Withhold some of the knowledge, so that the child
is excited to come back for more next time. Now, until I learn how
to add sound to my web pages (I will be trying to learn soon!) you will
have to SAY the words and click the button for your child to get to the
next screen. But this will give you a chance to interact with your
child in your lap, without a handful of cumbersome cards, or tedious preparation.
Just use your mouse to scroll down each page one screen at a time. Above
all, have FUN with your baby!
